Episode #4: Crankshaft Damper Replacements

Did You Know?

Most OEM Manufacturers recommend replacing your crankshaft damper every 500,000 miles.

A new crankshaft damper will prolong your engine life by eliminating harmful torsional crankshaft vibration.

Failure to replace a worn damper can result in a damaged or cracked crankshaft causing a catastrophic failure in your engine.

Signs of a worn crankshaft damper.

  1. Incorrect timing marks: The outer ring can move so much that the grooves are no longer aligned with the rest of the accessories’ pulleys. The pulley grooves may have uneven wear or polishing.
  2. Engine Vibration: If you have an odd engine vibration and no misfire codes, check the dampener for damage.
  3. Elongation of the dampener keyway: If the keyway shows any sign of damage or play, the crankshaft dampener is damaged.
  4. Worn edges on the belt: The outer ring can move so much that the grooves are no longer aligned with the rest of the accessories’ pulleys. The pulley grooves may have uneven wear or polishing.

Can I replace the Crankshaft Damper myself?

Absolutely, with the proper tools, an inexperienced person can usually replace the damper within a few hours. Although you can do this yourself it’s important to install the damper properly. Improper installation can be more harmful to your engine than a worn damper. Also, when installing it is a good idea to inspect your front main seal for any leaking or abnormal wear.
