Episode #3: Oil Changes

Did You Know?

Most Engine Manufacturers Recommend Changing your Oil between 10,000 to 25,000 miles.

Changing your oil at the proper intervals is consequential in extending the life of your heavy diesel engine.

If oil change services are neglected that can result in carbon build-up within your engine, pre-mature emissions failures, and catastrophic engine failures.

Also, the type of oil you use should be what the manufacturer recommends for your make and model engine.

Using the wrong type of oil can clog your DPF filters up sooner than expected, due to the different additive packages in the oil.

Can I self-perform oil changes?

Oil changes are very easily self-performed. Although if you do not have the proper equipment and place to dispose of your used oil it can be burdensome at times. Also sometimes shops that buy filters and oil in bulk can get bigger discounts from their suppliers, allowing them to be just as cost-effective as self-performing oil changes.

How much oil does most heavy-duty diesel hold?

Obviously, this depends on the make, model, and liter size of your engine, but a good figure estimate is between, 9-12 gallons of oil.

Should I add oil stabilizers or additives to my oil?

Here at Legend, we have seen a significant extension to the engine life of pre-2007 engines using oil stabilizers or additives such as Lucas Oil Stabilizer. We suggest if you have a pre-2007 engine, add them on every oil change. Post-2007 engines can be very temperamental to the type of oil they use, so with post-2007 engines, we suggest not adding any stabilizers or additives other than manufacturer-suggested oil. The emissions systems tend to react negatively.

How much does it cost to have a shop perform your oil change?

The price to change your oil has certain variables in it, such as engine make and model and where you are getting the work performed, but on average you can expect to spend $300.00-$600.00 per oil change.

The shop of your choosing should be able to provide you with an accurate estimate before performing the work on things such as oil changes that do not have many variances in them.
