Episode #5: Fifth Wheel Lubrication
Did you know?
Improper Lubrication of your fifth wheel is very harmful to your truck.
Signs your fifth wheel is improperly lubricated.
- Fifth Wheel binding up.
- The truck seems harder to turn.
- Noises coming from Fifth Wheel.
- Lots of playing in fifth wheel bushings.
- Improper wear on fifth wheel jaws.
- Improper Tire Wear.
- Tight King Pins make steering harder.
How Often Should I Grease My Fifth Wheel?
Most Fifth Wheel Manufacturers do not state a specific amount of time between lubricating your fifth wheel, so in this case, it is best to use your better judgment, if your couple and uncouple more often than not hooking to multiple trailers it may be better to lubricate your fifth wheel weekly. If you stay hooked to one trailer for the majority of the time your truck is in operation, you could probably stretch your fifth-wheel lubrication intervals to once every 30 days.
We suggest you uncouple your trailer at a minimum every 30 days and clean your fifth wheel and apply more lubrication.
What Type of Lubricant Should I Use?
Most manufacturers suggest the use of a lithium complex grease when applying lubricant. (Areas or regions that experience extreme and/or prolonged freezing temperatures should consider using a less viscous lubricant such as 90-weight oil, diesel fuel, kerosene, motor oil, etc. Doing so will help ensure proper movement/lubrication of the latching mechanism.
